Usage Rights


Copyright of the photograph remains with the photographer at all times

Entrants agree to grant Shadows and Light Magazine permission to use the work for promotional purposes, in any of its publications including the Journal, or on the website and other electronic media, or at exhibition or trade show, or other marketing materials for a period of four years from the Nominations & Winners Photo Show, without further permission or remuneration. 

Entrants also understand the work may be published in 3rd-party publications including newspapers, magazines and periodicals, solely for the purpose of promoting the work, the photographer and Shadows and Light Magaizne.

Photographer's name will be listed with the photograph.

WINNING PHOTOS will be published in the November 2018 issue of The Best of SHadows and Light 2018.

All contest finalists, top 8% of all entries, will be published in the hardcover book Best of Shadows and Light 2018.

First Place Winner will receive a mentoring session by Bruce Smith (30min). The Second Place winner will receive a image critique of his winning image by Bruce Smith. The third place will receive a featback by the Staff of Shadows and Light Magazine. The cover will be picked from the winning images by the Staff of Shadows and Light Magazine

Who Can Enter?
Open to professional and amateur photographers from any country worldwide shooting in all forms of color photography using traditional or digital methods.

How do you classify Professional or Amateur?
Professional category is for photographers whose occupation and income is made as a photographer. The Amateur category is for photographers who do not make their main income from photography.

What is the Final Deadline for submissions? 
All entries must be received by the Closing Deadline - midnight (Mountain Time) October 30, 2018. No entries will be accepted after this date.

How much are entry fees?
No Entry Fee

How many images can I enter?
There is no limit to the number of images you can submit.

Can I enter the same image into multiple categories?
The same image can only be submitted into one category.

Can I enter work that has been published?
Published and unpublished work is accepted.

Can I enter an image that has won or been nominated before at the International Color Awards?
Winning and nominated images cannot be entered again.

Is there a time limit on when the photograph was taken?
As to been taken in the last two years.

What happens to the copyright of the images and how will the images be used?
Copyright remains with the owner at all times. Submitted images may be used to promote the awards. The photographer’s name will always be credited with an image. (See usage).

Your personal information remains private at all times. Only your name and country are shown publicly on the website. We respect your privacy and will never sell your data to third parties.

What size of files can I submit?
Digital images must be saved as jpg at 72ppi, 1024 pixels longest side in RGB. Files should be named lastname-firstname_title.jpg (no accented characters in the filename).

Can I submit prints, books or CDs?
Only digital file at this point in time. 

Can I have my logo or name on the photograph?
Images must not have any embedded marks, logos, names or borders.

Do you accept black & white images?

Do you accept digitally manipulated images?
Digitally manipulated images are accepted.

What is the caption?
The caption is shown with the image in the Winners Gallery. The caption is for anything noteworthy about the photograph, such as when, where or why it was taken, subject, context, etc.
